Who we are

Cockermouth and District Civic Trust

Cockermouth and District Civic Trust is a voluntary organisation and charity with nearly 60 years of history. The Trust aims to preserve and stimulate public interest in Cockermouth and its surroundings, promote high standards of town planning and architecture, and secure the preservation and improvement of features of public or historic interest.

While maintaining the town’s character and identity, the Trust supports evolution to meet 21st century needs. It advocates proactive community involvement in shaping the town’s future, identifying positive development opportunities ready to be advanced when funding becomes available.

Our Aims

Aims of The Trust

Cockermouth should be an attractive, distinctive, and enjoyable town where residents take pride in living and shopping. It must honour its heritage while embracing the needs of the 21st century and building resilience to challenges like climate change.

The town must provide local employment, attract visitors, and ensure new developments respect its architectural character. Achieving this requires ambition from local councils, building owners, tenants, and the community. Environmental sustainability should be prioritised, with developments exceeding minimum legal standards to make Cockermouth a ‘green town.’
